Special Council Meeting
The Bessemer City Council met in special session on December 15, 2011 at 5:15 PM in the Council Chambers of City Hall.
Members Present
Mayor Becky Smith; Council Members: Dan Boling, Donnie Griffin, Alfred Carpenter, Howard Jones and Kay McCathen. Also attending was Janice Costner, Interim City Manager.
Call to Order
Mayor Smith called the meeting to order, stating the purpose of the meeting was to hear a presentation by Centralina Council of Governments regarding the City’s search for a Manager.
Mr. Jim Prosser, Executive Director, CCOG and Mr. Robert Henderson, Information Technology Director with CCOG addressed City Council regarding the selection process in hiring a City Manager. Among items to be considered are criteria, time frame, methods of advertising and assessment of candidates.
City Council members listed criteria that would be important to them during the search process. Mr. Prosser advised that a realistic time frame for the selection process should be about five to six months.
Following discussion, motion was made by Kay McCathen and unanimously approved to authorize Interim City Manager Janice Costner to negotiate a contract with Centralina, for Council approval at the January meeting. The contract will include advertising and assistance in the search, and will be open for changes as the process continues.
Being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:10 PM upon motion by Dan Boling and unanimous vote.
